How Many Writing Newsletters Do You Need?
My Big Blend Magazine column this month is titled: "How Many Writing Newsletters Do you Need?"

As my mailbox fills up with more than I care to say on a daily basis, I discovered many are duplicated content. Good content, but the same as someone else's a day or two before.

That isn't so bad as Brenda and I quote others frequently as we certainly don't have all the answers. But, you might want to consider taking a look at the time spent on reading newsletters, filing to read latter, etc.

Here is the link to that column and I look forward to your feedback.

Success-Tip from Peter Drucker on Unexpected Success

I have always been an avid reader of Peter F. Drucker's thirty five books, one of them co-authored with my father, Russ Colley. Peter Drucker is known as "the original big thinker."

Drucker said this about unexpected success, "It takes an effort to perceive unexpected success as one's own best opportunity."

Unexpected success is a sweet surprise and a fertile source of inspiration. It has happened to our team on a few occasions. I hope we have made the most of it.

Drucker advises us to not neglect this unexpected gift. "Identify it. absorb it, learn from it."

Success - Creativity 2
The following excerpt is from 2009 INDIE Finalist, "Success, Your Path to a Successful Book," by Maralyn D. Hill and Brenda C. Hill.

We are both strongly committed to creativity. Our first exposure to Creative Problem Solving (CPS) was with the Creative Problem Solving Institute (CPSI). They have a week-long program every June that is sponsored by the Creative Education Foundation. You spend a week using the CPS technique developed by Alex Osborn and Sidney J. Parnes, http://www.cpsiconference.com.

This program has been ongoing for over 50 years. The first time you attend, you learn the basic technique. In following years, you expand your creative knowledge. You will see a variety of attendees that will shock you - FBI, educators, writers, business people, and the list continues on. All segments of society realize the need to improve their creativity. Whereas we don't attend every year, we sometimes realize we need a creative fix. It encapsulates many avenues of creativity including but not limited to:

  • Thoughts on the nature of creativity
  • Creativity in the workplace
  • Creativity in education
  • Computer-enhanced creativity
  • Creative Dramatics

The six steps for CPS as taught at CPSI are:

  • Fact Finding
  • Idea Finding
  • Rules/Ideas for Brainstorming
  • Criterion Finding
  • Solution Finding
  • Acceptance Finding
  • Action Planning

Success Tip--Keep on Top of the World Around You

Since I met Maralyn decades ago, she has always been aware of this success objective. She has kindly repeated it often to her team and members of IFWTWA.

It is critical to keep fully on top of what is happening in the workplace of our wide world.

We all, teens and seasoned writers, need to understand what skills are in high demand and make sure to have them.

It is never too late to be an active part of the technical revolution.

Success Tip - Charging for Work

The Hill Team learned some of their lessons for success the hard way.
Think twice or say "no" before deciding not to charge for your work. People often don't value what they don't pay for.

However, there are times when you will determine it is a marketing expense. If that is the case, do it knowingly.

Success - Creativity 1

The following excerpt is from 2009 INDIE Finalist, "Success, Your Path to a Successful Book," by Maralyn D. Hill and Brenda C. Hill.

"True creativeness is finding new possibilities in old situations." - J. G. Saxe

The creative process of writing, editing and preparing your manuscript for the marketplace may feel like an ending, like sending your only child off to college. Yet, there is no end to the journey. It is a beginning.

Since you are a writer, you are aware of the joys of creative thinking and living the writer's life. Someone once called writing disciplined spontaneity.

A friend, Dr. Ken Gill, has a list of some attributes of creative people. Perhaps he is thinking of his lovely artist wife, Connie: "Creative people value the beauty of truth and the truth of beauty. They realize that they are only channels in the creative process. They realize that talent and conflict go hand in hand. Creative people cherish all the colors on the palette, and they aren’t afraid to color outside the lines."

Book Review: Sweet Revenge by Inka Piegsa-Quischotte

Sweet Revenge is an exceptional read. Just as Kathy Singer, its attractive London-based businesswoman and heroine, was captured in the story, so was I.

As many of you know, I review many books on writing and food and a few on fiction. This is due to my reading habit of reviewing several works at once. However, I started Sweet Revenge and couldn’t put it down. Every page of this 257-page novel is packed with adventure and grabs a hold of you.

Author Inka Piegsa-Quischotte manages to capture love, hate, fear, vulnerability, and intrigue in her first novel. Kathy Singer’s thirst for revenge entangles her in abduction, white slavery, and car chases throughout Turkey. One wonders if the Turkish journalist she meets is going to be her hero or if he is just chasing stories and using her.

Kathy overcomes a host of hurdles and winds up obtaining her sweet revenge in an unexpected manner.

Because Inka lives in Turkey part of every year, she was able to capture the flavor of its people for believable intrigue and resolution. Inka shows knowledge of details of the business world in London as well as Turkey and the international scene. In addition, she brings out longstanding traditions that are still present today.

By my standards, this is a must read and I’m surely going to read it again and look forward to Inka’s next book.

Success - Mistakes Happen

I once worked for a boss who was fair-minded and successful.

He did not mind if we, his employees, sometimes made mistakes.

He asked us to "be decisive." He added that he would rather have us be sometimes wrong than unable to make a decision.

He is still successful, and I hope that we remember that lesson in work and in life.

Sucess - The Hill Team Hints 2

The following excerpt is from 2009 INDIE Finalist, "Success, Your Path to a Successful Book," by Maralyn D. Hill and Brenda C. Hill

The Hill Team Hints

  • Let your passion show in your writing. Passion may be easier to emphasize in fiction than non-fiction. $uccess is non-fiction. We hope our passion shines through. If we didn't feel the pull, we would write something else.
  • Keep learning. We continue reading and attending workshops and conferences.
  • Read, read, and read more. Not just books about writing, but fiction and non-fiction written by others will help you become a better writer.
  • Notice the style of any book, cover, layout, and how you may have seen it marketed.
  • If you are internet shy or challenged, step outside the box and start learning. It is the way of the future. According to the BBC News in January 2008, "Books most popular online buy. More books are sold on the Internet than any other product and the number is increasing..."

Success and Values

Maralyn and I recently published a book we titled Success. It was about how to publish and market your book.

Perhaps we could have called it Values. Although we believe in success, our team loves this quote from Albert Einstein.

"Try not to become a man of success, but a man of values."

Success-The Hill Team Hints I

The following excerpt is from 2009 INDIE Finalist, "Success, Your Path to a Successful Book," by Maralyn D. Hill and Brenda C. Hill

The Hill Team Hints

"Success in your work, the finding a better method, the better understanding that insures the better performing, is hat and coat, is food and wine, is fire and horse and health and holiday. At least, I find that any success in my work has the effect on my spirits of all these." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Maralyn and Brenda Hill have co-authored books and articles together since starting with Our Love Affairs with Food & Travel. Norman Hill is their editor, and represents the third component of the dynamic Hill team.

Our hints include:

  • If you are not passionate about writing, pursue another career.
  • Decide who your likely audience is.
  • Rough out what you want to say in each part. It does not have to be a firm outline, but should have a form.
  • Make sure each section of your book fits and progresses logically with all other sections.
  • Whether fiction or non-fiction, the ending section should represent a resolution of all previous sections. It‚Äôs usually desirable not to leave your readers hanging (unless there is a sequel).
  • Dates and years-of-birth should be consistent with the overall theme, and consistent throughout all sections. A reader does not want to see someone go from 10 to 18 in three years.
  • Avoid giving to a final editor until complete.
  • Spend some time developing or refreshing the right side of your brain - creativity is fun, relaxing, and helps you break out of the box.

Book Review - Feed My Lambs, Feed My Sheep
A great memoir and recipe book.

Recipe included: Select Harvest Gewurztraminer Cake
Feed My Lambs, Feed My Sheep
by Nadine Begin, was an evolution of recipes from her early years on a Michigan farm, years spent in a convent, to wife of a former priest, then CEO turned winemaker. Together they own the Chateau Chantal where her culinary skills have come to life with her own gourmet style. Nadine's daughter, Marie-Chantal Dalese, convinced her mother to write this memoir that covers all aspects of her life with food, family history and photographs. All three parts are integrated to provide a compelling story with delicious recipes.

The early years were recipes of food similar to what my grandmother prepared except her's were Polish family traditions. She goes from perogies to babka in the convent for special occasions. the food was not all simple during those years, it also included the fancier food the nun's would prepare for others.

When Nadine went entered the world as a teaching nun with an apartment and less rigid constraints, she wasn't able to go make to the convent lifestyle. She discovered she was in love with a former Catholic priest who had left the priesthood and when she was finally released from her vows, they married. In 1983, they resided in Europe for nine months. They toured, studied wineries and got ideas for the winery they wanted. Plus her tastes expanded. The couple returned to Michigan and purchased a 60 acre cherry farm. Her CEO executive husband turned farmer. What a change. Now the recipes move on to ten years of bed and breakfast specialties from Chateau Chantal, to elaborate multi-course dinner parties.

For me, this books represents a history of food in America from the 1930s to the present. The recipes are clear and easy to follow. They evolve from simple to more challenging. But all aspects are delicious.

Begin, has done a lovely job combining her memoirs with recipes of the time and it's intriguing. It is also a compelling easy and quick read.

We are including one of Nadine's recipes:

Select Harvest Gewurztraminer Cake
18 oz yellow cake mix
1 small package vanilla pudding, instant
1/2cup water
1 cup Chateau Chantal Select Harvest Gewürztraminer
1/2 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1/2 cup pecans, chopped
1/4 pound butter
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
Line bottom of greased 10' tube pan with chopped pecans.
Blend boxed cake mix, pudding,
1/2 cup water,
1/2 cup Select Harvest Gewurztraminer,
1/2cup vegetable oil, and 4 eggs with mixer and pour into pecan-lined tube pan.
Bake at 325F. for 50-60 minutes.
Mix and boil for 3 minutes the following: butter, sugar, and ¼ cup water.
Remove from heat and then add remaining ¬Ω cup
Select Harvest Gewurztraminer. Pour this mixture over hot cake and leave in pan until completely cool before turning out.
Serves 16.

I encourage you to read the book and check out the Chateau Chantal website.

Success - Vanity Publishing 3
The following excerpt is from 2009 INDIE Finalist, "Success, Your Path to a Successful Book," by Maralyn D. Hill and Brenda C. Hill.

If you are tired of getting rejection letters, there are alternatives to using a vanity press:

  • Self publish (a lot of work).
  • POD (most publishers are reputable and straight forward, but check).
  • Reputable independent publishers.
  • Independent Publishing.

When you self publish, you need an editor no matter how good a writer you are.

Success- How You Speak to Yourself

I read a book in 1986 about the importance of how you speak to yourself. It is easy to fall back into old habits and thoughts such as this will never work. Then I remember the wise words in that book and in life's lessons, Yes, you can be successful.

We all know about the golden rule when relating and speaking with others. Yet, self-affirming thoughts play an important role in your own success. When these thoughts are backed up by a positive attitude, and steps that move us forward, they are powerful.

Following through on the belief that you can and will succeed will become a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Success - Vanity Publishing 2
The following excerpt is from 2009 INDIE Finalist, "Success, Your Path to a Successful Book," by Maralyn D. Hill and Brenda C. Hill.

Http://www.SFWA.org at its Writer Beware site has excellent descriptions of vanity presses, subsidy publishers and self publishing:

  • "A vanity publisher prints and binds a book at the author's sole expense. Costs include the publisher's profit and overhead, so vanity publishing is usually a good deal more expensive than self-publishing. The completed books are the property of the author, and the author retains all proceeds from sales. Vanity publishers may exclude objectionable content such as pornography, but otherwise do not screen for quality-they publish anyone who can pay. For an extra fee, some may offer editing, marketing, warehousing, distribution, and/or promotional services (often of dubious quality), or they may provide various-priced service packages that include differing menus of extras."
  • "A subsidy publisher also takes payment from the author to print and bind a book, but contributes a portion of the cost and/or adjunct services such as editing, distribution, warehousing, and marketing. Theoretically, subsidy publishers are at least somewhat selective. The completed books are the property of the publisher, and remain in the publisher's possession until sold. Income to the writer comes in the form of a royalty."
  • "Self-publishing, like vanity publishing, requires the author to bear the entire cost of publication and also to handle all marketing distribution, storage, etc. However, rather than paying for a pre-set package of services, the author puts those services together himself. Because every aspect of the process can be out to bid, self-publishing can be much more cost effective than vanity publishing; it can also result in a higher quality product. Completed books are owned by the author, who keeps all proceeds from sales."

Success- Quote for Today

The Hill Team likes quotes. We have used various quotes at the beginning of each chapter. But, there are many more.

Success quote of the day:

For the most part, we agree with William Feather who wrote "Success seems to be a matter of holding on when others have let go."

We also sing along with Kenny Rogers about knowing when to hold em and knowing when to fold.
