Success - Publishing 3
This excerpt is from 2009 INDIE Finalist, Success, Your Path to a Successful Book, Maralyn D. Hill and Brenda C. Hill.
It is important to understand some of the statistics of publishing: - According to the Association of American Publishers website in 2006, http://www.publishers.org, the net sales for books in 2005 was $25.1 billion.
- R.R. Bowker LLC website, http://www.bowker.com in 2006, said 172,000 new titles and editions were published in 2005. They also reported 83,000 publishers provide input to Books-in-Print.
According to 2007 Writer's Market from Writers Digest Books, the major publishers are:

Success--Traditional Publishing 1

This excerpt is from "Success, Your Path to a Successful Book," by Maralyn D. Hill & Brenda C. Hill.
Well, in a way, it is sad to say... traditional publishing seems to be going the way of the typewriters, rotary phones, and Victrolas… Still, there is a place for them. We loved walking by those imposing lions guarding the gates at Random House. We did not like waiting so long for its schedule for publications. It took close to a year or more, but seemed even longer.
POD, the internet, as well as a sprinkling of small literary publishers, are the present and future. Often, a book rejected by a major publisher will go on to be highly successful.
Rarely, a publisher will pick up a self-published book and publish a second edition. This can happen if your self-published book has sold 5,000 to 10,000 books in a short period of time. Ken Blanchard and The One Minute Manager is an example of a huge success that started out as self-published. Red Hot Internet Publicity by Penny C. Sansevieri is another that was picked up in 2008 and has just released a new edition.
For us, it simply took too long to publish in the traditional way. We had made the mistake of telling contributors that we would have it to them by the end of the year. The publisher who wanted to produce our book would have taken over a year.
We used POD, however, this required us to do a great deal of editing, formatting, and all marketing. However, in genral, traditional publishers only give your 30 to 60 days marketing.

Time Squander?

As I grow older, I realize what a valuable resource I sometimes squander - time.
I have not given enough attention to this precious gift.
By this I do not mean that we do not all benefit from taking an hour, a day, or even two weeks to reconnect with ourselves when it is the right time. I know a man who recently took a six months sabbatical. He is far richer in experience and insight and a more vital leader for this experience.

Meaning of the Word "Success"

There are many meanings of the word "success."
These days, many of us are re-evaluating our priorities. We know that need to take the time and space to re-think our careers, finances, hobbies or personal relationships.
Maralyn and I try to stop and take a deep breath, to plan our immediate and long term goals. We admit that we do not practice this exercise as often as we need to.
A a helpful question we ask ourselves is focusing on where we are going next and why?
This question has helped us to publish the book we were meant to write, aptly called Success. It also allowed us to put two other books, and projects, in the works, on hold for now. Sometimes it is simply a matter of saying no.
We paused, in the midst of busyness, to remember, what we really love best.
To achieve some new goals, we traveled to France this year. We each took some lessons to learn the skills we need to keep us informed and inspired.

$uccessful with Words Query Letters

The Big Blend Magazine features my article: "Succcessful with Words - Query Letters." I'm not sure if you realize they are many times more difficult to write than the article or manuscript. Hopefully, you'll find the material helpful as to the importance of and what needs to be included in a Query.

Review: Blow Me Away! Publishers’ Secrets for Successful Manuscripts

E. Keith Howick, Jr., President of WindRiver Publishing, certainly blew me away with "Blow Me Away!" As an author, editor and reviewer, I've read a dozen plus books on publishing, including one I co-authored, as well as more articles than I count. I've also attended and presented at writing conferences. Most books on writing have been written by authors themselves. Reading a publisher's explanation and insight brings you closer to the real publishing world. Howick has invested many hours in helping authors understand what is acceptable and necessary for agents and publishers. He has reviewed thousands of manuscripts and is more than willing to share his knowledge.
Because he continually sees the work of aspiring authors, he has put together a book of facts and guidelines that can be a tremendous tool. According to Howick, "Publishers and agents... are frustrated by the average new author's lack of preparedness; 85% of manuscripts are rejected because the story, concept, or writing is bad...
"Thirteen percent are rejected because they aren't presented well to publishers..." The publisher/author reinforces that the rules of yesteryear do not apply today. In addition to understanding how the book industry functions, publishing over 200,000 titles a year, he stresses the importance exceptional writing and editing of good material and marketing as well as how the economy affects submissions.
His book covers pre-submission marketing and promotion, agents, submissions, advances and royalties and contracts. In addition, he thoroughly discusses what authors can expect from publishers and what they expect from authors. I found the book development section especially informative. Howick provides the perspective of small, medium and large publishers with clarity and concise descriptions.
He says his book is only for the serious author. Here, I disagree. I feel the serious as well as the wannabe could gain insight into the real world of publishing so as to better prepare themselves for what path they should take.
The Hill Team does editing for authors who are generally independently published. When we feel someone should find an agent, we will recommend choices that are appropriate. Otherwise, we'll recommend reputable independent publishers. In any case, there is not an author we’ve met, traditionally or non-traditionally published, that would not benefit from Howick's straight forward, easy to understand explanation of the publishing industry and what it takes to be one of the 200,000 books a year that make the cut.
So, from my perspective, "Blow Me Away," has a value greater than the investment and I highly recommend it. Labels: book reviews, E Keith Howick, Jr, maralyn d hill, success

Success - Agents - Book Proposals 4

This excerpt is from "Success, Your Path to a Successful Book," by Maralyn D. Hill and Brenda C. Hill.
Remember, before you send the book proposal, send your one page query letter. It will be a waste of time to send the proposal unless you have been asked to submit it. We have heard a few agents say they would read a one page attachment.
When sending a book proposal or a query letter, we find the words of Philip Gerard applicable, "Write an opening that catches the reader’s attention and an ending that leaves a lasting impression."

Success - Agents - Book Proposals 3

This excerpt is from "Success, Your Path to a Successful Book," by Maralyn D. Hill and Brenda C. Hill.
Continuation of list for book proposal follows: A list of books that will compete with and complement yours.
About the author - mportant and relevant information.
The outline - one to three paragraphs on each chapter showing there’s a book and you have it successfully organized.
Sample chapters - one or two sample chapters show an editor how well you can write. For most books, the two strongest representative chapters you can send are best. The first chapter should be one of the two strongest as it is your first opportunity to hook the readers. If you start further back in your book, they will wonder what is wrong with the beginning. Refrain from sending the entire manuscript unless requested.

Success - Agents - Book Proposals 2
This excerpt is from "Success, Your Path for a Successful Book," by Maralyn D. Hill and Brenda C. Hill. Provide name/s of a well-known authority who will give your book credibility and be willing to write an introduction or quote.
If your book can be a series, or lends itself to sequels, mention your ideas.
Promotion plan: In descending order of importance, list what you will do to promote your book. For most books aimed at the general public, this list is as important as the book.
